Please Don’t Bomb the Ghost of My Brother
Please Don’t Bomb the Ghost of my Brother is international in scope and tirelessly ludic. The poems engage with the Covid pandemic, the war in Ukraine and personal loss. Stannard’s poems sing and weep in equal measure: a poetry of wretchedness and hilarity, of discombobulation and the bizarre, mindful of lacerating loss and the redemptive power of strangeness, a special type of humour. They supply a feast of stories.

Heat Wave
Heat Wave is a form of poetic cabaret,‘What good is sitting, alone in your room?/ come hear the music play!’ If a cabaret is full of high jinks it can also land punches – truth can be masked by the burlesque and the grotesque: ‘Tell all the truth but tell it slant’.

Average is the New Fantastico
A conversation between two friends, poems and paintings side by side, not illustrating or responding, but increasing meaning and adding new depths. ‘These poems…are about the unquenchability of human appetite. They make the best of things and ultimately, they promise us a benign philosophy. Roma Tearne’s subtle paintings offer a counterpoint to the text…in groups, in reverie, in celebration…these idiosyncratic figures intrigue us and catch us by surprise.

In Genoa, Stannard finds a dark and mysterious world, infinitely suggestive, between the pain of living, the absurd, wonder, fun. From this meeting comes one of the most original and captivating poems of our times, while he ideally revisits the city he frequented during his apprenticeship and evokes tasty places and episodes, memorable scenes, unavoidable oddities for a young Anglo-Saxon who immerses himself in the magma inexhaustible history of a marginal and symbolic place of the modern condition.

What were you thinking?
Julian Stannard is one of the very few mavericks in contemporary British poetry, a flâneur who observes the absurdity of life and brings this to the page with both heartbreak and humour. The poems in this new collection are grouped into three main sections: ‘Happiness,’ ‘The Street of Perfect Love’ and ‘Dear Nosh.’ Happiness, love, some decent food – not much to ask for, surely?

The Street of Perfect Love
A fantastic new chapbook from a poet much celebrated for his tonal control and simultaneous considerations of matters mordant and gleeful. Poems here are at once funny and melancholy; the style is inimitable: Stannard takes his readers through a range of emotions via a witty and wonderful tight-rope walking act with language.

The Parrots of Villa Gruber Discover Lapis Lazuli
The poems in this volume offer windows into seldom seen worlds; windows that open other windows, because behind every scene, it is possible to imagine another, possible to realise that there are several other things happening further in. Although sometimes bewildering, and resulting in a choppy effect, Stannard’s employment of Italian and French language in statements and place-names, provides colour and authenticity to the situations he depicts.

The Red Zone
An initial series of short pieces about domestic events and moments of hectic leisure suggests a writer who’s puzzled and even alienated by human contrariness. In similar vein we go on an Italian journey that interweaves direct experience with memories. ‘The Red Zone’, where he imagines returning to an apartment full of ill-assorted objects, defines the essence of this trail. Once abroad the reader is whirled through mood-swinging snapshots, often blurred and surrealistically tinted, making up a personalised album of characters, views, interiors, journeys.

Rina’s War
‘I like the cosmopolitism of these poems. This is not just a matter of crossing national frontiers with ease, but a seemingly boundless curiosity about human behaviour at all levels. I trust Julian Stannard’s observations of the world, for their accuracy and their spirit.’ – Christopher Reid
